Welcome to Eccentricity's most frequently asked questions

You can find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions here, you can also send us a message if you do not find what you are looking for.
What does high voltage mean?
The term high voltage usually means electrical energy at voltages high enough to inflict harm on living organisms. Equipment and conductors that carry high voltage warrant particular safety requirements and procedures. In certain industries, high voltage means voltage above a particular threshold (see below). High voltage is used in electrical power distribution, in cathode ray tubes, to generate X-rays and particle beams, to demonstrate arcing, for ignition, in photomultiplier tubes, and in high power amplifier vacuum tubes and other industrial, military and scientific applications.

What is a jointer?
A jointer, also known as a joiner, is a worker who is employed in jointing pipes or wires.
What is a high voltage switching operation?
High voltage switching operations are electrical switching operations of a high voltage network for the purposes of energising/de-energising high voltage electrical circuits. De-energisation for the purposes of electrical access require a switching sheet to be developed and isolation and access permit to be issued to workers after the circuit has been proven de-energised and earthed. Testing permits can also be issued for the testing of high voltage cables and equipment

What is a high voltage electrician?
LV = Traditional Electrician or a Sparky
HV = An Energy supply worker

A high voltage electrician is a specialised industry of trade professionals who work with and around the electrical circuits of a power station, power plants, solar farms and power generation and transmission equipment.
What is high voltage cabling?
A high-voltage cable, or a HV cable, is a cable used for electric power transmission at high voltages. A cable includes a conductor and insulation, and is suitable for being run underground or underwater.
What is cable termination?
Cable termination is what actions are taken with the end of a cable. In other words, it is how a connection is made between a cable and either equipment or a junction.
What is an earthing switch?
An earthing switch, otherwise known as a grounding switch, is a mechanical switching device which earths parts of an electrical circuit.
